Sleep Training: Day 1

Yesterday I got the book Lull-a-Baby Sleep Plan from the library and read the parts that pertained to our situation. It explained that between 3 and 6 months is the ideal time to sleep train your baby, so we are on the tail end of it! Let me first explain sleep training as I thought it was something totally different up until yesterday. Basically you teach you little one how to fall asleep on his own by letting him learn how to self soothe. I thought that this meant letting baby cry it out, but I have since been corrected. The approach we chose was much more gentle and it hardly involved any crying once we got the hang of it! It was almost midnight by the time we did get the hang of it, but when done properly Jackson slept for two 4 hour stretches without even making a peep!! So if we continue for a week or so we should be able to just let him fall asleep on his own when he is tired! We'll see how things progress in the next week. I must say though it certainly feels good to have more than 2 hours of rest in a row!

Oh and I have changed the comments option on my blog so now anyone can comment on my posts! Just click on the "0 comments" at the bottom of the post and let me know if you have anything to say!

What is the method?

The method is putting him down when he is semi-awake and lulling him to sleep by singing, babbling or shhhing. So he learns to fall asleep in the crib instead of on us. While we are lulling him he using self soothing tools such as sucking his thumb and sometimes cooing or fussing a bit. So eventually he will not need us there at all and we'll be able to just put him down and he'll slef soothe to sleep!
