Check Up

We did Jackson's 6 month check up a bit early, because I wanted some answers and suggestions about his sleeping habits. The doctor didn't really have much to say other than he is very healthy, and is not yet teething. He wieghes 15 lbs 4 oz and 26 inches tall! I wasn't really too surprised by his weight, but I didn't realize how tall he'd gotten! The doc suggested that the reason Jack is geting up is because he wants to be with us and has learned how to get us to come to him whenever he wants. She suggested looking into the Ferber method of sleep training. This method suggests putting baby awake in his crib and letting him cry for a certain length of time before going in to console without picking baby up. Each night you extend the cry time and usually after 7 nights baby is self soothing and sleeping for much longer periods of time. Well I tried this for his last nap and it was hell! I rocked him til he was drowsy then put him in his crib. For a long time he just made little noises for a while, but then started to cry. After 10 mintues of him bawling his little brains out I went to settle him, but had to pick him up. He wouldn't settle for me so Cory tried and that didn't work either. All that worked was me feeding him. He fell asleep after a few minutes and I was able to put him down, no problem. So we'll see how tonight goes. I don't think we are going to be letting him cry it out though....I still feel sick about the whole thing! We are getting a new book called the Lull-a-baby sleep plan that Cory's sister reccomended, so hopefully that will help. If it doesn't we might have to try letting him cry a bit, but we will try to avoid that at all costs.
